How to Become a Writing Tutor
Writing tutors and mentors are hired
by Anne Greene, Director of Writing Programs, in the spring semester of
each year to begin work the following year. Tutors usually work for one
semester. The application process includes
submission of a preliminary application, a completed tutor application form, submission of a writing sample,
and an interview with Anne Greene. If you decide to apply, please read the
information below. Applications will also be available outside Anne Greene's
office (Room 207, Downey House, 294 High St), in early April.
Writing tutors and mentors receive
a stipend and may also choose to
receive one course credit in English. All tutors participate in ENGL 491, the
Ford
Teaching Seminar, which meets once a week, noon-1 PM on Tuesdays.

Writing Tutor/Mentor Application
Follow these instructions to apply for a position as a
Writing Tutor
or for a position as a Writing Mentor working with first year
students.
To Apply:
- Do this immediately, please: complete the preliminary
information sheet available online. At the latest, the sheet is due by
Monday, April 20th, at 5 P.M. It is available at

- Then print and fill out the application form, which is available
at
http://www.wesleyan.edu/writing/workshop/tutorapp2.html
Be sure to include your transcript (from your portfolio or a copy
from the
registrar). Write in the names of course instructors where they are not
listed on the transcript. Paper copies will also be available outside of Anne
Greene's office.
- Return the completed application to Anne Greene’s office, Downey
House, room 207. Applications are due Monday, April 27th, at 5pm.
- Check the interview schedule to be posted online in early May
to see if you will be interviewed:

Interviews will be held on May 6, 7 and 8.
- Expect an email during the summer letting you know whether you have
been offered a position. (If you don’t hear from us, please call.) If
you receive an offer, please be prepared to reply immediately. Make sure
you have Anne Greene’s phone and fax numbers (below), and be sure that
she has a way of reaching you by telephone, fax, or email between late
May and mid-August.
