Wesleyan Writing Program Fellowships

The deadline to apply for Fellowships is February 27th, 2009. Please see below for details.

Ford Fellowships:

The Ford Fellowships in the Writing Program, awarded to two graduating seniors at Wesleyan, are prestigious one-year, post-graduate positions that offer teaching and administrative experience as well as graduate training. As graduate students, the Fellows are eligible to take two academic courses, conduct research, and work collaboratively with faculty members. In their administrative role, the Fellows assist the Director of Writing Programs in running the university's Writing Program and the Writing Workshop. The Fellows' teaching responsibility includes training more than one hundred student writing tutors, designing and leading the seminar for veteran tutors, and serving as the university's senior writing tutors themselves: they provide editorial advice for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty members. The Fellows also play a central role in writing program development, helping to design new services and events, advertise programs, and develop web sites and online services.

Ford Fellows are selected based on their outstanding academic records and writing or teaching interests.  Preference is given to applicants who are considering academic careers.  Previous fellows have been admitted to graduate programs at schools including Yale, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia, MIT, Berkeley, and the London School of Economics.  Other Fellows now work in law and business, at foundations and in a range of other positions where writing experience is an asset.

The Fellowships include a generous stipend, health insurance, and ongoing student status, offering the opportunity to defer repayment of student loans.  Fellows also have full access to the university's libraries, facilities and career services.

Russell House Arts Fellowship:

The new Russell House Arts Fellowship is awarded to a graduating senior (from any major) with an outstanding record and an interest in writing and the arts. The Fellow holds a joint academic/administrative position for a post-graduate year, doing graduate work, teaching, and event planning, working closely with the Director of Writing Programs.

As a graduate student, the Fellow is eligible to take two courses per year, to do research and teaching, and work collaboratively with faculty members. At the Russell House the Fellow organizes and supervises the writing and music events and helps with other literary events on campus. The job offers an opportunity to work with distinguished writers, journalists, and other artists.

The position offers valuable experience for anyone interested in arts programming or nonprofit work, or anyone who wants a position that offers real responsibility; it is equally useful to students planning to attend graduate or professional school.

The Fellowship includes a generous stipend, health insurance, and ongoing student status, which allows for loan deferment. The Fellow also has full access to the university libraries, career services, and other facilities.
